My Job: Education
If you have children in public schools, K-12, technical or community colleges, what I do on the State Board of Education affects you - graduation requirements, teacher requirements, class size, etc. If you need training for your job, recruiting new jobs, or courses for senior citizens, what I do can help you.

District 7 of the State Board includes 1/8 of the state population in 10 counties including 19 K-12 school systems and 3 community colleges (*Bevill State Community College, *Northwest-Shoals Community College, and *Shelton State Community College).

I'm proud of what the State Board has achieved in the almost 10 years since I've been your representative. Some of those achievements are:

  • Reduced class size caps in ALL K-12 grades
  • Doubled the number of computers in schools
  • Statewide all grades 3-11 score above 50th percentile on Stanford
  • Drop-out rate reduced more than 11%
  • Established annual statewide Parenting Day to bring parents into schools
  • Successfully Merged Bevill State and Walker Colleges
  • Opened new Shelton State Community College campus and programs
  • New State Fire College facilities opened for state's firemen and paramedics
  • Developed Dual Enrollment for high school students with higher education
  • Encouraged 2 year colleges to partner with K-12 systems for distance learning
  • Opened new wood products program and TV station at Northwest-Shoals CC

There is much left to do. As your representative for the next four years, I will work to:
  • Expand the successful Alabama Reading Initiative to all elementary schools
  • Establish the Math, Science, Technology Initiative for all schools
  • Have all students reading at grade level by 3rd grade
  • Strengthen partnerships between K-12 schools and community colleges
  • Expand Dual Enrollment for high school students
  • Appoint from my district an Advisory Committee for our community colleges to help plan for future job needs
  • Continue to safeguard access to community colleges - particularly for senior citizens
  • Develop policy to help recruit and keep Alabama's students in Alabama
  • Be accessible to all that I represent in District 7
